Armida Encounters the Sleeping Rinaldo

Work by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1742-1745) on the ill-fated love of Armida and Rinaldo, immortalized by Torquato Tasso’s epic poem Jerusalem Delivered. It is the first narrative scene, when the beautiful Armida sees the young knight Rinaldo asleep and, falling in love with him, carries him away on her cloud-borne chariot. Armida’s action will distract Rinaldo from his quest of liberating Holy City. The pale colors used by the painter, the bright colors and the firmament of the sky emphasize the dreamlike dimension of the work. Tiepolo painted three more paintings on this epic.
