Headaches which often occur in elder individuals in the middle of the night, typically two to three hours after falling asleep, without any other symptoms like agony, vomiting, tearing, etc., causing an awakening of more than 15 minutes, are called hypnic headaches. It is a rather rare condition that affects both sexes and is particularly bothersome to the patient, due to the systematic awakenings. It is not associated with any neurological pathology and it sometimes arises in patients with analgesic abuse. Treatment may involve caffeine before bedtime, melatonin or lithium.
