Dream of the Deacon Justinian

Wood panel by Italian Renaissance painter Fra Angelico (1395-1455), which is part of a larger altarpiece dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian, two twin brothers who have practiced medicine in the third century. The work, created between 1439 and 1442, was commissioned by Cosimo de Medici and has been in the Convent of San Marco in Florence ever since. Deacon Justinian sleeps quietly on a wooden bed with raised pillows and dreams that Cosmas and Damian, patron saints of the Medici family, cure him of a malignant tumor in his leg, implanting a healthy leg of a Moor who had died of the same disease.
