Le Sommeil

Le Sommeil (Sleep) by French painter Alphonse Eugène Felix Lecadre (1842-1875) is a highly symbolic painting in which the white skin of the sleeping mother and son opposes to the dark tones of the room, seeming to depict the simultaneously light and deep sleep in which nothing and no-one interferes. The mother’s velvet dress reinforces the sense of depth, bringing the child into a sleep which reflects the symbiosis between two beings. Alphonse Eugène Lecadre, who died at age 33, mostly painted female nudes in languorous and sensual poses. Le Sommeil, painted in 1872, is an outstanding piece in his short work.
